How to Arrange the Kitchen Wares

Modern kitchens often have open display shelves that are also used for storage. Dishes and glasses do double duty as eating utensils and as part of the kitchen decor. The shelves may be located inside a cabinet, which protects what's on them from dust, or sitting out in the open on plain shelves. Unorganized open shelves lead to a cluttered look to the kitchen. Arrange your kitchen shelves so they're productive and attractive.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Cloths
  • Soapy water
  • Shelf liner

1.Take everything off the shelves. Wipe them down with a cloth dipped in soapy water. Dry the shelves with a soft cloth. Install shelf liner if desired. If you do opt for shelf liner, select a liner that coordinates with the color scheme of your kitchen since it will be visible at all times.
2 .Select items that you seldom use for the very top shelves, which can be difficult to reach. The items should still be attractive. Just because you use that old metal turkey roaster only once a year doesn't mean you want it on display the rest of the year. You might choose large serving platters, soup tureens or a collection of antique equipment for these high shelves.
3. Place items that have some visual weight to them on the bottom shelf. Colorful cookbooks, canned pickles, fruits and vegetables in glass jars, olive oil and kitchen ceramics are good choices. These items ground the shelves since they're heavy or heavy-looking. It's the same theory as arranging bookshelves: The bigger books go on the bottom shelves, and the smaller, lighter books go on the upper shelves.
4. Put the larger items, such as stacked dinner plates, in the center of the remaining shelves. Arrange medium-size items on either side of the larger items. These can include salad plates, soup bowls and large coffee mugs. Smaller items, such as saucers, dessert plates and small coffee cups, should go on the ends of the shelves. Don't stack items too high.

5. Approach the arrangement of the two middle shelves a little differently. Put the larger items to the left on one shelf and to the right on the other. Intersperse the medium and smaller items so they are on opposite sides of their shelves. In other words, if the medium items are to the right on the upper middle shelf, they should be on the left on the lower middle shelf. Visually, they need to balance each other out.
6. Choose another arrangement for the three middle shelves. Divide the larger items into three. Put one set in the middle on the middle shelf. Put another set to the right on the upper middle shelf and the remaining set to the left on the lower middle shelf. Place the medium and smaller items evenly divided on the three shelves among the larger items. Keep like items together --- with the exception of the three groups of larger items. All the cups should go on one shelf, all the salad plates on another and the saucers all on one shelf. That way, it's easy to put the dishes away after washing, each in its own place.

Tips & Warnings

·         Keep the colors on the open shelves consistent with your overall color theme.
·         Check the weight load of your shelves. Too many heavy items will cause them to give way and fall to the floor.
·         Turn the shelves over every six months so they don't become warped from the weight of the items.
